Day 4:Creature creations
Expedition:
In this lesson students finished up there clay creatures! Dan began the class with a demo of clay assemblage using the method slip and score, scratching both surfaces of clay and covering them with a wet clay mixture to bond the two pieces together. The students explored different techniques as they created their creatures and took the necessary precautions in preparing them for their firing.
Essential Understanding:
During this class students were shown how and why fundamental clay building techniques are used in a work of art. The goal of the day was for the students to get started on the creation of their clay animal. Through todays lesson students will gain a better understanding of the clay building process, along with the importance of creatively solving problems as they arise during construction.
Inquiry/Learning Target:
For todays Learning objectives, the students will be able to.....
-Effectively apply their knowledge of the literacy terms to their work of art (Assessment/Evaluation).
-Evaluate their peers work and other artists' work based on their knowledge of the literacy terms (Historical/Multicultural Content).
-Determine what art processes to use when creating their work of art (Conceptual/Ideation/Personal Grounding).
-Work with others and problem solve as a group or individually (Critical Reflection/Aesthetics/Transfer).
Key Concepts:
-Art Processes
-Expression
-Experimentation
-Prior Knowledge
-Artistic intention
-Choice
Skills:
-Collaboration
-Observation
-Experimentation
Art Focus:
The art focus of the day is the investigation of how clay building techniques are used in the creation of a 3-D piece of art.
Literacy Focus:
Vocabulary Terms for todays lesson:
-Slip and score
-Armature
-Coil Building
-Slab Building
The vocabulary terms listed above are essential to the students understanding of building clay objects. We will pre-assess their knowledge of the terms at the beginning of the class. At the end of class we will assess their understanding of these terms by looking at how they were able to incorporate the techniques listed above into the construction of their creature.

Above is a picture a Maggie demonstrating to the class the slip and score technique. After learning this technique in the class before Maggie is reviewing the information for her peers to focus on the importance of the technique. Maggie chose to use a fork to score the clay but other students used a variety of tools such as clay tools and pencil tips. After her demonstration the class repeated the reasoning of using this technique.
In this lesson students used a variety of methods to construct their creature. In the photo above, Sadey decided that coil building would work best for her creature because of the smooth round textures it provided. Sadey is using the slip and score method to attach the coils that she learned in class.
Bobby created a mountain for his griffin and also ran into the problem of it being to thick. When he asked me what he should do I brought Sadey over to describe to him her solution. She felt very proud to show her solution to a classmate and Bobby could view hers as an example.
This lesson was a review of pertinent information on the properties of clay building. Students had created problems and solutions for their work and will continue their project with mixed media introduced in the next lesson!
